A VENETIAN BLINDER
The group is largely traditional in its approach, but that is not to say there are no non-figurative or more experimental works to be seen.
Among those that caught my eye were a strong group by the chairwoman, Judy Buerling, linking collage with watercolour on a seaside theme with bold design and colour. The group's president, David Weston, shows three large watercolours reflecting his travels in Italy and France.
Newcomer Nicola Pennill shows abstract landscapes of Northumberland, of which Winter Dawn II is very striking, with bold washes of cool, free colour.

Octogenarian artist Norman Sims exhibits some lively acrylics done from the group's visit to Venice. His vigorous techniques would do credit to many an artist half his age.
Also from Venice are a group of lyrical watercolours by Roger Lancaster. Some may well label these as Turner-esque, but his influences are more likely to come from a study of the Croatian artist Joseph Zbukvic. Nonetheless, they present a very professional technique and delicacy of touch.
Others in this talented show widen the appeal further, with some fine drawings by Derek Wright, botanical studies by Kath Davies and competent watercolours by David Wright, Tony Slater, Tim Hughes, Audrey Paddock and Tim Fisher.
All in all, an invigorating exhibition that is well worth a visit this coming holiday weekend. |
